Q&A with Bernie Scott
What do you do for a living?
Currently I’m a full time sports and exercise science student at Bath, and aspiring social media influencer in the vegan calisthenics domain.
When and Why did you become interested in fitness and nutrition?
I began my journey December 2014 when I had no clue what I was doing and probably just cruised on beginner gains until the summer of 2015 when I started training harder than ever and trained ever since. And the main reason for being borderline obsessed with fitness and nutrition is because it keep my Crohn’s tamed as well as is an aspect of life where I can push my boundaries time and time again. I truly love pushing the limits, and my performance has skyrocketed since going vegan, it’s almost as though my body can do more than my mind can take right now which is fascinating
When and Why did you decide vegan was the right choice for you?
I made my vegan transition 1st September 2019, so quite recently. Before doing this I was vegetarian for a year. I knew veganism is the right choice, as someone who has a deep faith I feel exploitating animals is just wrong and a very selfish thing to do. I was assured in my decision after watching the Game Changers movie
I see your IG mentions you are a Chrone’s Warrior, if you are happy to discuss, please could you delve a little deeper into what this is, how it affects you, and what do you do to overcome this day to day?
Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease where the body “attacks itself” in a process of flare ups, where sometimes I’d spend the night sleepless rolling in pain when it’s bad. Nonetheless, most of the time it’s in remission, that is that it doesn’t effect me at all. I do feel a very strong connection between training, diet and Crohn’s. I’m not on any medication and I avoid flare ups by always training all out basically making it very difficult for my body to fight itself cause I push it to the limits and beyond.
One thing to remember is that, if you or someone you know has Crohn’s, you NEED to train HARD and keep your diet in check!
What is your favourite exercise?
I honestly really like the calisthenics “power moves” such as the front lever there you hang of a bar holding your body parallel to the ground using your back and core strength. I’m also a big fan of classics such as push ups, pull ups and dips. But if I had to choose one it would probably be the push up cause it can be modified in so many ways and always work on new push up moves
What is your dream goal/challenge to achieve in life?
My dream is to make training my full time work by coaching people online. The reason is that I believe I’m not an anomaly and that everyone can live painfree with Crohn’s through calisthenics and veganism. I also would love to be a recognised fitness influencer as I believe I’m a unique person with something new to bring into the industry
What are you most proud of?
I am extremely proud and grateful about how my Crohn’s doesn’t impact my day to day life which is a blessing
What is the best advice you have been given in your life, that you would now give to others?
Keep moving forward- so simple in principle so powerful in practice! Literally just taking small steps forward in a consistent manner will result in insane results, also having faith in the outcome is crucial!
What do you like most about Pure Blends Protein?
I am a MASSIVE fan of the fact that it’s all raw and natural ingredients, it’s very hard to find true, pure chemical free foods nowadays, so I appreciate Pure Blends for prioritising health!
